Rabies Update
June 9th, 2010 by martin
In 2009 the Indonesian government ordered the poisoning of all street dogs, both healthy pets and strays, in an attempt to control the spread of rabies. In December 2009 we, along with WSPA and B.A.W.A (our partner organisation in Bali), commenced a massive vaccination program based out of Ubud in the Gianyar region. The government has suspended their culling program in this area in response to this initiative. This means we are saving the lives of thousands of dogs as well as protecting the health and well being of the Balinese people. Our desexing project has been scaled down to divert our resources towards the vaccination programme.
There are currently six teams catching and vaccinating full time in an attempt to stop the spread of rabies throughout the island. Experts in rabies control have helped formulate this well targeted plan which follows the most up to date guidelines for rabies control in the world. Currently out of an estimated population of 58,000 dogs in this region we have vaccinated 36,990. Our funds have enabled the B.A.W.A staff to focus their efforts on this devastating problem.
