Rabies Update

June 9th, 2010 by martin

In 2009 the Indonesian government ordered the poisoning of all street dogs, both healthy pets and strays, in an attempt to control the spread of rabies. In December 2009 we, along with WSPA and B.A.W.A (our partner organisation in Bali), commenced a massive vaccination program based out of Ubud in the Gianyar region. This saved the lives of thousands of dogs and protected the health and well being of the Balinese people. The government suspended their culling program in this area in response to this initiative.

The Government carried out phase 2 of the vaccination program in 2011 and commenced phase 3 in early 2012.  To date this year there has only been one human fatality in Bali.
